River Eye Summer Farm Walk: Barley in the Eye

This Farm walk will help your understanding of:

·         Local experience of cropping and rotations with use of cover crops dealing with black grass and soil management.

·         Maximising stewardship for business and environment – working with the landscape.

·         Practicalities of the of the new cross compliance conditions for soil management.

·         New Countryside Stewardship scheme and CAP greening.

A Guided Farm walk:

Beanstore limited: Jon Stables of Berrys Farm Business Management have refined their use of cover cropping and rotations to maximize returns whilst caring for their soil. They have also made best use of stewardship options to protect water on high risk areas and enhance biodiversity to benefit the environment and stewardship revenue in a balanced approach.

Cross compliance and soils: George Cook from FAS will discuss relevant aspects of the new soil management provisions which are now based on actual field issues.

The New Countryside Stewardship Scheme: Martin Banham and Des Kay from Natural England will be providing an overview of the new scheme.

Pub supper: We will then adjourn to the Stilton Cheese inn, Somerby LE14 2PZ, for a buffet pub supper around 7:15 with a  discussion on payments to farmers for ecosystem services and the value of environmental branding - This event will involve a moderate walk of approximately 2km.
